[EN] Charlie Banana Feminine Cloth Pads - Review II

In April I bought some reusable pads from the brand Charlie Banana and at that time I already made  a very complete post about them here in the blog. Despite that, I still hadn't used them and I received several messages with questions and doubts about them. I received messages from people who were interested in how they worked, and others who told me they thought they weren't worth it or they simply thought they wouldn't never want to use them or even try it!

So, this time I'll try to talk about them in topics. I advise everyone who has some interest in reading the first post about them here, although I will probably recapitlate some things.

Most people might not feel the need to try a product like this... For me, there were several reasons that led me to look a product like this. Besides the environmental awareness, because many of the things we use nowadays are unnecessarily disposable and in plastic, I'm allergic to disposable pads, and most of the times I had rash, like babies when using disposable diappers. Also, the smell of disposable pads was always an issue for me, it really bothers me. I could feel their smell when they were even in the package and when using them it was horrible, specially in hot days, I would swear I could smell them all the time when using them.

What led me to look for a product were several reasons. In addition to environmental awareness that many of the things we use today are disposable and unnecessarily plastic is that I make allergy, I was often baked, as with babies with diapers and the smell of disposable sanitary napkins always bothered me a lot . I am very sensitive to odors and I hate the smell of disposable dressings, I have always used Evax, since I took them from the package until its use, on hot days mainly, sometimes it seemed that I smelled the dirty dressing on my nose, even when I just changed them ...

Some of the questions I received were:

- How do we change them when we are out?

"Do they absorb well?"

"Are there no leaks?"

"Are they comfortable?"

"Aren't they very thick, like we are using diapers?"

I also received some comments such as:

"I can't figure out how they are more environmentally friendly since we have to wash them and so waste water and detergent"

"I wouldn't  want to have the worrie of washing them."

"I couldn't handle the blood when I would have to wash them."

First of all I will focus on the environmental issue. Concerning the disposable pads, we have to necessarily buy them every month, so it's a question of math. You can calculate and multiplicate "x" pads a day per "y" days of period plus 12 months a year. If we use three pads a day, we have and average of 5 days with period, we will spend 180 pads a year. There are obviously people that use more, others who use less. Here we are just looking at the waste of the pads itself. Then you have to think abot the packaging where they come, the larger packaging where they ae delivered at the supermarkets, their transport up to the supermarket (the waste and pollution involved), the entire process of manufacturing them in the fabrics (water, electricity, pollution, etc.) and the raw materials used. When we look at a product we can't only see it for itself, we have to think about the whole ecological footprint of it. Some days ago I saw in a video a very interesting observation, the pads we used in our first period, won't possibly be decompesed, not even in the generation of our great-grandchildren.

For those who say to me "they aren't ecologicaly worth it because we have to wash them and spend many water", my question is: "do you eat on plastic plates ???".

When we buy a reusabble pad, we buy a product that is produced once, transported once, and although these contain plastic in some way, because they have a waterproofing layer and aren't made of cotton, they are produced only once and last for many years ( I do hope so). The person who advised to try Charlie Banana's pads, told me she had hers already for eleven years and they are still perfectly white and they have the same effectiveness as in the beginning.

Charlie Banana's pad are made in China, this is a point that I do not like very much but at the moment, unforunfortunately almost everything we buy comes from China . Anyway, for thosr those who want to try a little bit more eco firendly pads, you can always search for someone or some brand that makes them in your area.

Charlie Banana's pads were inspired by reusable baby diapers. These pads are available in four sizes:

- Liner

- Regular

- Super

- Super+

- Combo (a set with four pads, one of each of the ones mencioned above)

These pads are made with three different layers, the under layer that is in contact with the undergarment is waterproof to prevent leakage, the middle layer is absorbent and the top one is  stay dry. 

These pads are available in black and white and in plenty of other colorful and feminine patterns. The exterior varies in color but the interior is always white, made in a fleece that is extremely soft to the touch, it is so pleasant that makes you want it just for pleasure! Obviously with the washes the fleece becomes to look more "used". According to what I have been researching, they are made in polyester and nylon fiber and not in cotton because the cotton does not have the same absorption capacity and would leave you feeling the period moist and uncomfortable. Anyway the cotton would only be advisable because of the material respirability and if it was organic, since in cotton's crops are usually used tons of herbicides and pesticides.

When I bought these pads, I asked my sister if she would want to try them too, and although she was not very convinced, she eventually was convinced and converted to them. Initially we bought three Combo packs and we split between them the two of us and then I just felt the need to have more and I got two more packs, one of Regular (blank ones that initially was not in stock) and another in size Super. I'm already in the third cycle using them and I'm very satisfied.

Aren't they too thick like we are using diapers?

I used to use Evax, compared to them yes, they are thicker, initially I could feel a difference, I felt almost like I was wearing pads for the first time. But let's be honest, there are in the market disposable pads as thick or thicker than these ones and there are people who use them. After a few days we get used to them and we only feel it if we are thinking about it, otherwise I do not even remembered that I've put it on. You certainly remember to wear feminine pads for the first time, the initial feeling with these is more or less the same. Where I could feel the most the thickness was in the back, like I had a little cushion. In most clothes you will not notice anything, obviously if you wear a bigger size and a very tight and very light or transparent pants it will probably be noticed but this is the same thing as you wouldn't wear panties with flowers while wearing pants with more transparency.

Are they comfortable?

Yes, they are very comfortable, the most pleasant aspect is that they are very soft. I just feel that they could be a bit narrower because they tend to bend slightly, it's like a U-shape and the period instead of going to the middle tends to get accumulated more on the sides

Do they absorb well?

Yes, they absorb better than a disposable pad and that was the point that surprised me the most. With the disposable ones, when they are dirty, no matter how little, I could always feel a dampness and always had a stickiness on the surface which made me want to change the pad no matter how much fluid they might have in them. One of these days, using the Charlie Banana's, I thought, "What the hell, if I had not come to the bathroom, things would have gone badly ..." I hade some period on the pad and I did not even noticed it, I felt the pad completely dry. It is therefore undoubtedly what has pleased me most about them, the feeling of being dry and clean.

Don't they slide?

It depends ... with me not even once! The brand advises that you wear an underwear that isn't much narrower than the pad to unsure that it doesn't slide. My sister although has some narrow panties and complained that when using them the pad turned around during the night, so this is a point to keep in mind. The snaps on the pads guarantee that they stay perfecty attached to the underwear. Concerning they sliding back and forth the bigger the pad is less it slides. Sometimes it slightly slips back with the smaller sizes but we easily put it back in place.

Aren't there any leaks?

At this point they work like any disposable pad, if you change them with the necessary frequency there are no leaks, in fact I feel that they are much more absorbent than a disposable one and we must also agree, disposable ones aren't  also free of accidents and leaks. I already had some accidents and leaks, more than once with disposable pads.

How do we change when we are not at home?

Like any normal pad, the difference is that we have to fold them and bring them home in a purse. Each pack of three pads comes with a waterproof pouch, I walk with two in the wallet, in different colors to distinguish them, one is for the dirty ones, the other for the clean ones. The way they are designed allows them to be folded with the dirty side inside and they stay closed with the snaps. When we get home we wash them. If you prefer, if you have a private washbasin on hand, you can give them a pre-wash with water, squeeze them well and then put it in the bag but it will not be such a practical option. I confess that in these three cycles I didn't need to change them a single time when away from home, because when I know that I will be out I use a tampon also. This will depend a lot on the habits of each one. Maybe if I had a lot of flow, If I spent all day out and just wear pads this option might not be very viable because I could not see myself walking with five or six dirty pads inside my wallet and so many clean others to change.

How do we wash them?

They are as easy to wash as any other garment. We can cold wash them in the machine, without bleach or softener. What I do is, at the end of the day I put them in water and the next day I wash them all in the bath. I put them on the base of the bathtub to get them soaked while I take a shower and then I put a few drops of detergent and wash them by hand, do not even feel the need to wash them in the machine. Now I have in the tub the a blottle Dr. Bronners' citrus gel and that's what I  use to wash them. It may seem a bit crazy but I had a little beach bucket that someone offered with my name on it and as I don't use it and don't have kids, that's what I use to clean them. I have it the bathroom, I fill it with water and leave there the pads soaking, while I don't wash them. If you prefer you can put them directly in the laundry machine or at the end of the cycle wash them all in the machine. One plus point is that they dry relatively quickly, if it is a warm weather they take a day or two to dry, so they can be used again. It's a very simple thing to do, it takes only five minutes to wash them, anyone who says that wouldn't be able to do it is just pure commodity, the same commodity of those persons who buy eggs cooked and peeled in the supermarket.

"I could not handle the blood while washing them!"

Well, you won't meet a person who deals worse with blood than I do, I'm thirty years old and I cry everytime I need to do blood tests, I have a huge phobia but in terms of the period it's something different and I don't face it the same way. Blood from period is something that we have to get used to since and we are very young and if you can't wash a pad, I can't understand I you would even be able to just clean yourself with toilet paper ... In the case of these pads, the blood is so well absorbed that you won't even notice it that much. It's just like a dirty, dry stain. You can simply soak them and toss them to the next laundry machine. Simple!

What is the cost of these pads?

This may be the only "snag"! Ok, they are not cheap! A pack of three pads costs around  20€ and a pack with four different ones costs around  25€. How many you will need to get really depends on your flow, days of menstruation and how many times a day you change the pad. The brand recommends that you purchase a combo pack, a Regular pack and a Super pack. But let's be honest, disposable pads aren't cheap too. I made the calcules and with the amount of pads I use, the reusable ones are paid at the end of a year. Well, if tyou use them for five years (surely they will last longer), it's like not having to pay pads for four years.

Size compared to disposable pads

In another post I put a picture on the size Super  and a regular sized Evax with flaps that was what I used to use. When I bought these, I took an Evax from my bag, in the store and compared them, the size was similar, so I though the sizer super would be the one I would use most. I was wrong. These pads are thicker and as they don't stick (don't have glue) to our underwear we can place them in the place we want, so it stays put right in the middel of the panties so I felt the regular size was short for me at the front in the days with more flow. So the size I use most and feel more comfortable with is Super. I use the regular one in the beginning and at the end of the period and then I have Super+ if I need extra protection while sleeping and liner to use as a salvaslip.

Do they feel hot?

I read somewhere that the pads on warmer days become a bit uncomfortable. I still can not comment on this, we had some hot days here but I experiencied one day or another and I did not feel anything. Maybe if I used them several days over 30º maybe I would feel it but I also never felt good with the disposable ones at this point, I always felt everything sweaty and with rash!

Conclusion, I am quite satisfied with these pads, if I could change anything in them I would only make them slightly thinner but maybe it is a necessary thing to ensure  their optimal absorption. Perhaps they wouldn't just be a good option when travelling by plane because it involves tacking them and bringring them back in the suitcase and eventually they wouldn't dry in time to bring them all cleaned and dry. 

I like to keep them folded in the drawer and I realized that if you have them in different sizes it's better to have them in differente colors and keep them in mind, otherwise it's a little difficuld to identify them. Well, I quickly solved this problem, I picked up a line and needle and on the label that says Charlie Banana I embroidered their sizes as S, M, L, XL, so I quickly realize which is which.

Personally I feel a lot more comfortable and dry with these pads than with the disposables ones.

Charlie Banana Pensos Higiénicos - Review II

Em Abril, comprei uns pensos reutilizáveis da marca Charlie Banana e na altura fiz uma publicação bastante completa sobre eles aqui no blog. Apesar disso, na altura ainda não os tinha usado e recebi várias mensagens com perguntas e dúvidas sobre eles. Tive mensagens de pessoas que se mostraram interessadas em saber como eles funcionam e outras que me diziam que achavam que não compensavam nada e que jamais seriam capaz de tentar sequer usar semelhante coisa.

Portanto, desta vez, vou tentar ir por partes e aconselho, a quem tiver interesse, a ler a primeira publicação sobre eles aqui, embora seja provável que recapitule algumas coisas.

A maioria das pessoas talvez não sinta necessidade de experimentar um produto deste tipo, o que me levou a procurar este produto foram vários motivos. Além da consciência ambiental, de que muitas das coisas que usamos actualmente são descartáveis e em plástico desnecessariamente, faço alergia aos pensos descartáveis e ficava muitas vezes assada, tal e qual acontece com os bebés com as fraldas . Por outro lado, o cheiro dos pensos higiénicos descartáveis sempre me incomodou muito. Sou muito sensível aos cheiros e detesto o cheiro dos pensos descartáveis, sempre usei Evax e desde que os tirava do pacote, e durante o se uso, nos dias de calor principalmente, às vezes parecia que sentia o cheiro do penso sujo no nariz, mesmo quando os acabava de trocar...

Algumas das perguntas que recebi foram:

- Como os trocamos fora de casa?

- Absorvem bem?

- Não há fugas?

- São confortáveis?

- Não são demasiado grossos tipo fraldas?

Recebi também algumas observações tais como:

- Não vejo de que forma são mais amigos do ambiente uma vez que depois temos de os lavar e gastamos água e detergente

- Não quereria ter o trabalho de os lavar

- Não ia conseguir lidar com o sangue quando os tivesse que lavar

Em primeiro lugar, vou-me debruçar sobre a questão ambiental, nos pensos descartáveis compra-mo-los obrigatoriamente todos os meses e é uma questão de fazer contas, "x" pensos por dia, vezes "y" dias de período, vezes 12 meses por ano... Se gastarmos três pensos por dia, tivermos uma média de 5 dias de menstruação, iremos gastar 180 pensos por ano e ainda há obviamente pessoas que usam mais do que isso. Aqui estamos apenas a olhar para o desperdício do penso em si. Além do penso , existem a embalagem em que vem para nossa casa, as embalagens maiores em que são entregues no supermercado, o transporte para os supermercados (poluição no transporte), todo o processo de fabricação dos mesmos (água, luz, poluição, etc.) e as matérias primas utilizadas. Quando olhamos para um produto não podemos ver só aquilo mas pensar em toda a pegada ecológica dos mesmos. Há dias vi num vídeo uma observação muito interessante, os pensos que usamos no nosso primeiro período possivelmente não se irão decompor sequer até à geração dos nossos bisnetos. 

Para quem me diz "não compensam a nível ecológico porque os temos de lavar e gastar água", a minha pergunta é: "comem em pratos de plástico???".

Quando compramos um penso reutilizável, compramos um produto que é fabricado uma vez, transportado uma vez e, embora estes contenham plástico de alguma forma, porque têm uma camada impermeabilizante e não são feitos em algodão, são fabricados apenas uma vez e duram muitos anos (assim o espero). Quem me aconselhou os pensos da Charlie Banana foi a Tânia da Ecological Kids que me contava que já os usava, os mesmo, o mesmo kit de cerca de nove pensos há onze anos e que continuavam branquinhos e com a mesma eficácia como no início. 

Os Charlie Banana são fabricados na China, é um ponto que não me agrada muito mas actualmente, infelizmente, quase tudo o que compramos vem da China.  Para quem quiser experimentar uma versão "mais sustentável" há quem os faça mais perto, há quem os faça artesanalmente, eu preferi arriscar nestes porque me garantiram serem bons ao invés de andar a experimentar uns e outros.  Entretanto já descobri mais algumas marcas que me pareceram semelhantes por cá e até gostava de experimentar.

Os pensos Charlie Banana foram inspirados nas fraldas reutilizáveis para bebés. Existem disponíveis em quatro tamanhos:

- Liner

- Regular

- Super

- Super +

- Combo (um conjunto com um penso de cada dos anteriores)

Estes pensos têm três camadas, a camada debaixo que fica em contacto com a roupa interior é impermeável para prevenir fugas, a camada do meio é absorvente e a de cima stay dry. Existem disponíveis em branco, preto e em vários padrões, coloridos e femininos. O exterior varia em cor mas o interior é sempre branquinho, numa espécie de polar extremamente suave ao toque, é tão agradável que dá vontade de usar só porque sim! Obviamente com as lavagens o polar deixar de ser tão lisinho e bonitinho e fica com um aspecto mais "usado". Segundo o que fui pesquisando, são concebidos em fibra de polyester e nylon e não em algodão porque o algodão não tem a mesma capacidade de absorção e iria deixá-los húmidos e desconfortáveis. Seja como for, o algodão só seria mais aconselhável por uma questão de respirabilidade da matéria e se fosse biológico, já que o algodão é das culturas em que mais se utilizam herbicidas e pesticidas.

Quando comprei estes pensos perguntei à minha irmã se também queria experimentar e apesar de não estar muito convencida acabou por se converter. Inicialmente compramos três packs Combo e dividimos entre as duas e depois acabei a sentir necessidade de ter mais e adquiri dois packs, um no tamanho Regular (em branco que inicialmente não havia em stock) e outro no tamanho  Super. Já vou no terceiro ciclo a usá-los e estou muito satisfeita.

Não são demasiado grossos tipo fraldas?

Eu costumava usar Evax, comparativamente com eles sim, são mais grossos, inicialmente sente-se uma diferença, senti quase como se estivesse a usar pensos pela primeira vez mas há pensos no mercado tão ou mais ou grossos que estes e há quem os use. Ao fim de alguns dias habitua-mo-nos e só os sentimos se andarmos a pensar nisso, caso contrário nem me lembro que os tenho colocados, como num penso descartável. Certamente lembram-se de usar pensos higiénicos pela primeira vez, a sensação inicial é mais ou menos a mesma. Onde se sente mais a espessura é atrás, junto ao rabo, como se tivéssemos uma almofadinha. Na maioria das roupas não se percebe nada, obviamente se usarem um tamanho maior e umas calças muito justas e muito claras ou mais transparentes vai-se notar provavelmente mas isso é como não usar umas cuecas às flores com umas calças com mais transparência. 

São confortáveis?

Sim, são muito confortáveis, o mais agradável é que são muito suaves. Sinto apenas que podiam ser um nadinha mais estreitos porque tendem a dobrar ligeiramente, fica como que em "U" e o período em vez de ir para o meio tende a ficar acumulado mais nas laterais

Absorvem bem?

Sim, absorvem melhor que um penso descartável e foi o ponto que mais me surpreendeu. Com os descartáveis, quando estavam sujos, por muito pouco que fosse sentia sempre ali qualquer coisa, uma humidade e ficava sempre uma viscosidade à superfície o que me fazia querer trocar os pensos por muito pouco fluído que tivessem neles. Um dia destes, ao usar os Charlie Banana pensei "mas que raio, se não tivesse vindo à casa de banho a coisa ainda tinha corrido mal..." tinha tido algum fluxo e nem sequer me apercebi, sentia o penso completamente sequinho. É portanto, sem dúvida, o que mais me tem agradado neles, a sensação de estar seca e limpa.

Não saem do sítio?

Depende...comigo não saíram uma única vez. A marca aconselha que se use uma roupa interior que não seja muito mais estreita que o penso em si para garantir que ele não foge. A minha irmã tem umas cuecas que são bastante mais estreitas que as minhas e queixou-se que o penso deu a volta e ficou virado para baixo durante a noite, portanto este é um ponto a ter em atenção. As molas com que fecham garantem que eles ficam perfeitamente presos à cueca. Quanto a deslizarem para a frente e para trás, quanto maior for o penso menos correm esse risco, nos mais pequenos às vezes deslizam ligeiramente para trás mas dá-se um jeitinho e volta ao sítio, ou isso ou ainda não me habituei totalmente a eles, ainda tenho um ligeiro receio.

Não há fugas?

Neste ponto funcionam como qualquer penso descartável, se trocarem com a frequência necessária não há fugas, aliás sinto que são bastante mais absorventes que um descartável e convenhamos, também não estamos livres disso com os descartáveis, tanto é que já tive acidentes mais do que uma vez se o fluxo fosse muito.

Como os trocamos fora de casa?

Como qualquer penso normal, a diferença é que temos de os dobrar e trazer para casa dentro de uma bolsa. Cada pack de três vem com uma bolsa impermeável, eu ando com duas na carteira, de cores diferentes para distinguir, uma para os lavados, outra para os sujos. A forma como são concebidos permite que sejam dobrados com a parte suja para dentro e ficam presos com as molinhas. Quando chegamos a casa lava-mo-los. Se preferirem, se tiverem um lavatório privado à mão, podem dar-lhes uma pré-lavagem com água, espreme-los bem e depois colocar na bolsa mas não será uma opção tão prática. Confesso que nestes três ciclos ainda não precisei trocar uma única vez fora de casa, até porque quando sei que vou estar mais tempo fora de casa ou a andar uso um tampão pelo sim pelo não. Isso vai depender muito dos hábitos de cada uma. Possivelmente se tivesse muito fluxo, passasse o dia todo fora e só usasse pensos esta opção talvez não me fosse muito viável porque não me via a andar com cinco ou seis pensos sujos dentro da carteira e outros tantos para trocar.

Como os lavamos?

São tão fáceis de lavar como qualquer outra peça de roupa. Podemos lavá-los na máquina, a frio, sem lixívia nem amaciador. O que eu faço é, no final do dia coloco-os em água e no dia seguinte lavo-os no banho. No banho, coloco-os na base da banheira para irem ficando ensopados (se for o caso) e depois coloco umas gotas de detergente e lavo-os à mão, nem sequer sinto necessidade de os lavar na máquina. Agora tenho na banheira o gel líquido da Dr. Bronners cítrico e é com o que os lavo. Pode parecer meio maluco mas aproveitei um baldinho de praia que me tinha sido oferecido pelo Boticário e pus na banheira, quando preciso encho de água e deixo lá os pensos de molho. Se preferirem podem colocar directamente na máquina da roupa ou no fim do ciclo lavá-los todos na máquina. Um ponto a favor é que secam relativamente rápido, se estiver calor passado um dia ou dois já os podem voltar a utilizar. É uma coisa bastante simples de se fazer, demora cinco minutos, quem não se imagina a fazê-lo é comodista apenas, do tipo que compra ovos cozidos e descascados no supermercado.

"Não ia conseguir lidar com o sangue ao lavá-los!"

Bem, não irão conhecer pessoa que lide pior com o sangue do que eu, tenho trinta anos e choro para ir às análises, tenho uma fobia enorme mas no que toca ao período é algo diferente que não consigo sequer encarar da mesma forma. É uma coisa a que temos de nos habituar desde novas e se não se vêem a lavá-los também não sei como se limpam com o papel higiénico... No caso dos pensos o sangue é até absorvido e nem se percebe grande coisa, fica só ali uma mancha suja e seca. Podem simplesmente colocá-los de molho e atirá-los para a próxima máquina de roupa. Simples!

Qual é o custo destes pensos?

Este talvez seja o único "senão"! Ok, não são baratos! Um pack de três iguais ronda os 20€ e um pack com quatro diferentes ronda os 25€. Quantos vão precisar de adquirir vai depender do vosso fluxo,dias de menstruação e quantas vezes ao dia trocam. A marca recomenda que se adquiri uma pack combo, um pack Regular e um pack Super. Convenhamos, os pensos descartáveis também não são baratos. Fiz as contas e pela quantidade de pensos que costumava usar, os reutilizáveis pagam-se ao final de um ano, se os usarem durante cinco anos (certamente que irão durar mais), é como se não pagassem pensos higiénicos durante quatro anos.

Tamanhos comparativamente aos descartáveis

Na outra publicação coloquei um penso destes no tamanho Super e um Evax tamanho regular com abas que era o que costumava usar. Quando comprei os Charlie Banana, saquei de um Evax  da carteira na loja e comparando-os achei iguais e logo pensei que seria o que mais usaria. Enganei-me! Estes pensos como são mais grossos e não ficam colocados à cueca, logo não podemos determinar o local em que ficam agarrados, senti que os Regular eram pequenos demais para os dias de maior fluxo. Isto deve-se ao facto de eles ficarem colocados exactamente no meio da cueca e portanto pareciam-me curtos à frente, uma vez que o meu período tem tendência a ficar mais à frente durante o dia. O que mais uso é o Super, o regular para o início e fim e depois têm os super+ se necessitarem de protecção extra à noite os liner que se usam como um pensinho diário.

São quentes?

Li algures que os pensos em dias mais quentes tornam-se um bocadinho desconfortáveis. Ainda não consigo opinar sobre isso, já tivemos uns dias bem quentes por cá mas apanhei um dia ou outro e não senti nada. Talvez se os usasse vários dias acima dos 30º talvez sentisse mas eu também nunca me senti bem com os descartáveis nestas alturas, ficava toda suada e assada! 

Conclusão, estou bastante satisfeita com estes pensos, se pudesse mudar alguma coisa neles só os tornava ligeiramente menos espessos mas talvez seja um mal necessário para garantir a absorção ideal. Talvez só não sejam uma opção se for por exemplo viajar de avião porque implicam levar e voltar a trazer na mala e eventualmente não secarem a tempo para estarem limpos e secos para colocar na mala. 

Eu gosto de os guardar dobrados na gaveta e apercebi-me que se não comprarem tamanhos diferentes em cores diferentes e decorarem, é um bocadinho difícil de identificá-los a não ser que os abram todos. Rapidamente resolvi o assunto, peguei numa linha e agulha e na etiqueta em que diz Charlie Banana bordei os tamanhos S, M, L, XL, assim rapidamente percebo qual é qual.

Pessoalmente sinto-me bastante mais confortável e seca com estes pensos do que com os descartáveis.

Alguma dúvida que fique sobre eles, ou alguma coisa que me tenha esquecido de mencionar estejam à vontade para perguntar!

[EN] Charlie Banana Reusable Feminine Pad

Yesterday I made a post here on the blog talking about Charlie Banana Feminine Pads. I reached the brand to get some informations and they kindly asked me to write this post in English, as a review after using them.

So I'll try to resume a little bit my story, as I discovered this product. I have more than one instagram accounts, I have one related with this blog @alexandra_aragao, I have one with my work - illustrations - @halma_designs and other one @alexandra.aragao where I share my kind of hobbie with plants. I have two balconies and I tried to assemble a little herb garden/farm in them. Because of this I started talking with a women from other part of the country, that shares the same love for plants as I do. Later I discovered that she was the owner of a physical and online store name Ecological Kids, where she sells products for kids and mothers, that are eco friendly.

Nowadays everyone talks about plastic and its damage to the planet and about replacing the items we usually use made in plastic for others, like replacing plastic bags for paper bags. I guess this can generate another problem in the future. I think we need to think more about reusing products than replacing plastic for other materials. We really need a mind change. For example, in this particular case of bags, if we move from plastic to paper, which is a less resistant material, the demand for paper will begin to increase and there will be a deterioration of the environment in another way, it is a vicious cycle . Therefore, I think it is imperative that we change our consumption habits.

Continuing with the previous story, one day, talking with the owner of the shop Ecological Kids, I told her I was allergic to disposable feminine pads and I had exactly the same problem when I as a baby with disposable napies. I can tell you is not a cool feeling, I turn red, swollen, with itching and burning!! It is worse in summer, in hot days and specially on the end of the day. This made me use sometimes cloth towels, I even used some I had from when I was a baby to sleep but it isn't very comfortable and impossible to use during the day.

I already had seem some brands of reusable pads on the internet, there is even who handcraft them at home, but no one ever seemed very appealing to me, I was scared of having some sort of accident during the day with leaks and so...

The Ecological Kids' owner told me then she sells some reusable feminine cloth pads and that she regularly uses Charlie Banana's ones. She insisted me to try them. Charlie Banana is a brand mainly focused in selling nappies but they applied the same concept to feminine pads. I've been wanting to try these pads for about an year ago but never manage to go to the store untill now. The big deal is that they are a little bit of an investment... I had this idea since last Summer, now that the hot days are coming back I quickly was reminded about my problem... 😂😂😂

Os pensos Charlie Banana prometem ser confortáveis, facilidade na lavagem, resistentes a manchas, super absorção e ficarem no lugar o dia todo! 

I've read some reviews online and I have some fears, like they will be uncomfortable, too thick, too hot or that they do not stay in the place as we move all day! On the other hand, I can advance already that they look very nice, hey have the same size as the disposable ones I used and the fabric that stays in contact with the skin is super soft.

They have a stay dry  layer, an absorbent one in the middle and an impermeable layer  that stays in contact with the underwear. Before somebody asks, they aren't made in cotton. I made a little research and I concluded although cotton could be more healthier, it would stay moist and we would feel it all wet. Anyway, it would only be more healthier if the cotton was organic. Many people doesn't know but cotton fields are one of the crops that use more pesticides and herbicids, also it is frequently bleached to please the consumers with that white look everyone knows.

To keep them in place they close with two little snaps they stays under the underwear. These snaps are also usefull to keep them in place when folded, as they turn in a little usefull square to take on the bag or store at home.

These pads are all white in the inside in the outside (and flaps) they are available in plenty of options, for white and black to all sort of colorfull prints. I wanted them in white but there wasn't stock so I bought them in black and the print peony blossom. There are different prints available the EU site and in the rest of the world.

These pads always comes in packs of three and it includes an waterproof pouch to keep them. There is another pack (Combo) with four pads and it includes one of each size.  

There are four different sizes available (prices from Charlie Banana EU site):
- Super + 23.99€ 
- Super   22.99€  
- Regular  19.99€    
- Liner   18.99€  

- Pack Combo (one of each size) 26.99€

As advantages of using these pads:

- More environmentally friendly, you buy them only once, they are made to reuse
- They promise not to smell (which is a very annoying thing, especially when hot).I hate the disposable ones' smell, they smell bad even when we take them out of the package
- They promise to be more comfortable, after all, our skin stays in contact with a fabric and not with a plastic thing
- They promise to be more absorbent and leak free because they have a waterproof layer underneath
- They are much healthier alternative to conventional disposable hygiene products
- The cushions are easy to wash
- Free of allergies, many women are sensitive to the chemicals commonly found in disposable pads,

In terms of disadvantages, I only see that they can be uncomfortable or thicker than I am used to, but I will try them soon and  hope to come back with a proper opinion.
In second place we have the problem of transport, when they get dirty and if we want to change it,  being not at home, they will have to be folded and putted inside the waterproof bag to bring them to wash at home or you can wash them in a washbasin, if you have some privacy to do itm squeeze well and only after that out them in the bag.
In third place, it's really having to wash them but I was used to do it sometimes after night with fabric towels.
At last, it's their price, it's a little of an investment but you only buy them once. I was told by someone she had hers for 11 years!

To clean is better to thoroughly rinse the sponge with tap water and place it in a washing bucket until it is ready to wash. Mostly sunny, with a few passing clouds. Use ecological detergent. Only half the amount is needed. Do not use fabric softener or bleach. Hang to dry or put in a dryer, dry in a low drier. Do not iron.

They need to cold washed, up to 40º but they can be putted in the washing machine. Before washing them, we can throw them into the basin, while we shower, so they can be rinsed without many effort and spending extra unnecessary water. I already used to do this and clean the towels with my feet while I shower.

I was advise to have about 9/10 pads for a period cycle, maybe a combo box, a regular one and a super but it will really depend on the flow of each one or how many days you have your period.

I bought three combo packs, to share with my sister. I think I'll have to get more if I like them! 

Pensos higiénicos reutilizáveis Charlie Banana

Há uma loja aqui no Porto que eu desconhecia completamente, porque fica num local onde habitualmente não passo, chamada Ecological Kids onde se vendem - como o nome indica - produtos mais amigos do ambiente para crianças e não só.

Podem lá encontrar livros, brinquedos, fraldas, roupa, garrafas, talheres, palhinhas, produtos de cosmética, produtos de banho, detergentes e mais que possam lembrar, tudo numa vertente mais amiga do ambiente e com foco na reutilização. 

Numa altura em que se fala muito nos danos que o plástico anda a causar ao planeta eu acho que é importante pensar mais do que a substituição na reutilização de materiais. O plástico que anda entre nós infelizmente já não há-de desaparecer e se trocarmos apenas os materiais mas continuarmos com consumos exagerados e irreflectidos, vamos continuar sempre a ter um impacto negativo no ambiente. Por exemplo, no que toca aos sacos, se mudarmos do plástico para o papel, que se trata de um material menos resistente, a procura por papel vai começar a ser maior e vai haver uma delapidação do ambiente de outra forma, é um ciclo vicioso. Portanto, acho que é imperativo mudarmos os hábitos de consumo.

Para quem não sabe, eu tenho mais do que uma conta de instagram, uma relacionada com este blog, outra com o meu trabalho de ilustração e uma terceira onde comecei a partilhar coisas mais pessoais e as minhas muitas plantinhas que tenho nas varandas. Foi assim que comecei a falar com a Tânia da Ecological Kids, por coincidência, porque partilhamos o gosto por plantas e algures pelo instagram demos com a conta uma da outra, sem eu saber sequer o que ela fazia profissionalmente. Um dia descobri que era dona da loja e acabou por vir à baila um problema que tenho, faço alergia a pensos descartáveis!!!

Já tinha visto online algumas ofertas de pensos reutilizáveis, como as fraldas de bebé, que em miúda tive de usar porque me acontecia exactamente o mesmo, fazia alergia, ficava assada e posso dizer, agora que tenho consciência, que não é uma sensação agradável, fico vermelha, a arder e com comichão. A situação agrava-se sempre ao final do dia e principalmente no Verão, quando está calor. Não me acontece sempre mas quando acontece não é agradável nem avisa, o que me leva a ter de dormir muitas vezes com toalhitas de tecido e a pôr pomada. Lamento se o cenário for demasiado descritivo mas é a realidade e certamente acontece a mais pessoas que não a mim!

Existem várias marcas de pensos reutilizáveis, até há quem os faça artesanalmente mas nunca me apelaram muito, sempre achei que a coisa ia correr mal e ter acidentes durante o dia. Conversa puxa conversa, veio à baila a marca Charlie Banana. Na realidade a Charlie Banana é uma marca que produz fraldas para bebé e adaptaram o conceito a pensos higiénicos. A Tânia lá me convenceu a experimentá-los e confesso-vos que andava há um ano para ir comprar para experimentar (na altura do Verão passado), agora que o tempo quente voltou, voltei a relembrar-me da vontade de experimentar qualquer coisa diferente. 😂😂😂

Os pensos Charlie Banana prometem ser confortáveis, facilidade na lavagem, resistentes a manchas, super absorção e ficarem no lugar o dia todo! 

Andei a ler algumas opiniões online e tenho alguns receios, que sejam desconfortáveis, que sejam grossos, que sejam quente e que não fiquem no sítio! Por outro lado, posso adiantar-vos já que têm muito bom aspecto, que têm um tamanho semelhante aos de supermercado e o tecido que fica em contacto com a pele é super macio.

Eles têm uma camada stay dry, uma absorvente e uma camada impermeável que fica junto à roupa interior para não deixar passar nada. Antes que alguém pergunte, não são em algodão, pela minha pesquisa e pelo que percebi, embora o algodão pudesse ser mais saudável (no caso de ser bio, porque as plantações de algodão são das que mais pesticidas e herbicidas usam e depois ainda levam lixívia para ficar branquinhos e agradarem mais ao consumidor), tem o problema de reter a humidade e sentir-se-ia o penso molhado. Para os segurar no sítio, fecham com duas molinhas por baixo das cuecas. As molas também servem para os manter dobrados enquanto estão guardados e ficam num quadradinho.

Eles são todos brancos no interior e no exterior e abas existem disponíveis em várias opções, brancos, pretos e com vários padrões floridos. Eu pessoalmente queria-os em branco mas não havia em stock, acabei por optar por preto.

Vêm sempre em packs de três pensos e todas as caixas incluem uma bolsa impermeável para os guardar. Existe ainda um pack de quatro pensos,  todos com tamanhos diferentes.

As vantagens de usar estes pensos:

- São mais amigos do ambiente, compram uma vez e reutilizam-nos sempre, no site da marca, salvo erro, dizem que podem ou devem ser usados durante cinco anos mas quem já uso fraldas reutilizáveis nos bebés sabem que elas duram uma vida. Digo isto porque ainda tenho por casa algumas das que usaram em mim e usava muitas vezes o interior delas precisamente para dormir quando estava com o período. São caros mas supostamente nunca mais têm de comprar pensos higiénicos e todas sabemos como eles são caros

- Prometem não ter cheiro (que é uma coisa que me incomoda bastante, principalmente no tempo quente), digam o que disserem, os descartáveis cheiram mal, cheiram mal logo quando os tirámos do pacote

- Prometem ser mais confortáveis, afinal ficamos em contacto com um tecido e não com uma coisa plástica

- Prometem ser mais absorventes e sem fugas porque têm uma camada impermeável por baixo

Em termos de desvantagens, só vejo que possam ser desconfortáveis ou mais grossos do que estou habituada mas isso logo verei com o uso e espero vir voltar a falar neles, em segundo lugar temos o problema do transporte, quando ficam sujos e se querem trocar, fora de casa, vão ter de os colocar dentro da bolsa impermeável e trazê-los para lavar em casa ou passá-los por água se tiverem um lavatório (com alguma privacidade) e espremê-los bem antes de colocar na bolsinha, em terceiro, é mesmo o lavá-los. Mas eu já costumava utilizar muitas vezes coisas em tecido para dormir. 

Eles têm de ser lavados em água fria, quanto muito até 40º, sem lixívia nem amaciadores. Também podem ser secos na máquina. A marca aconselha que se lave primeiro à mão antes de colocar na máquina. Uma das sugestões é que durante o banho (isto também para não gastar água extra), se atire o penso para o banho e ele vai-se lavando no chão enquanto tomamos banho, era exactamente o que fazia quando usava toalhas de pano para dormir, depois espremem-se e atiram-se para dentro da máquina de lavar roupa! E convenhamos, até agora tinha de despejar baldinhos de casa de banho mal cheirosos no lixo, pensem, esses baldes e baldes de lixo acabam-se e o tempo que perdia nisso, atiro os pensos para dentro da máquina da roupa.

Aconselharam-me a ter cerca de nove pensos destes para conseguir ter sempre um limpo durante todo o ciclo mas, sinceramente, isso vai depender do fluxo de cada uma e da quantidade de vezes que trocam. Eu como também uso tampões muitas vezes acabo por não trocar muito. 

Fui com a minha irmã às compras e, apesar de ter achado uma coisa meio inconcebível andar a usar estes pensos, acabamos por trazer para as duas. Optamos pelos packs de quatro tamanhos diferentes para experimentarmos todos. As imagens desta vez não são da melhor qualidade porque foram todas com o telemóvel, porque vão já todos para lavar, nem têm tempo de um registo mais decente!!!!
